Rail Jeeps adapted to run on rails
Rail Jeeps came about because there was a lack of rail locomotives due to allied bombing.
It was realized that the dimensions of the Jeeps wheel track was very close to the gauge of the railways 4 foot 8 1/2 inches, with a bit of ingenuity the Royal Engineers adapted a Jeep by making a type of railway wheel and fitting them to a Jeep. The idea soon caught on and soon kits were being made and supplied to many parts of the world. The small Jeep Go Devil engine was able to pull some very heavy loads. some Jeeps were converted permanently. but most the rail wheels could be removed and the road wheels replaced.
