Starting with where to find them. Both are at the front end of the chassis, the Willys MB chassis number is on a small plate attached on the inside of the frame just behind the bumper on the drivers side. The Ford GPW chassis number is stamped on the frame on the drivers side and can be seen from inside the engine bay.

Ford GPW Chassis numbers
Ford used Willys chassis when they started building Jeeps. So Ford Jeeps from February to March 1942 used Willys chassis but were numbered using the Ford system stamped in the rail. There were also three type of stampings used on the Ford GPW, it is unclear as to why or which dates they were used.

Jeep Chassis Numbers Notes
While every effort has been made by our researchers to make the information as accurate as possible, some of the Military Jeep records are unclear others incomplete. another factor that makes things difficult is that some chassis were used on later vehicles, so you can find a 1943 chassis number on a vehicle delivered in 1944. It must be appreciated that during war time records of chassis numbers and use in the correct order was not a high priority.
